In addition to shelter for families, Harford House provides:

Education in life skills, job readiness and personal growth
Individualized case management to help each family overcome the root cause of their homelessness
Referrals to partner agencies
Personal connection to the community through local churches and volunteers

Although they serve all types of families, the majority of the families in past years have been single mothers with children. Today, a new trend, driven by the economy and the foreclosure crisis, is bringing more intact and larger families to HFH. Currently, in all of their programs, they have 20 families, with 43 children, living in apartments and rental homes located throughout the community. HFH is the only shelter in Harford County that can serve an intact family consisting of a father, mother and children.

Cost effectiveness of the program is also significant. HFH costs run $24.71 per night, per person including all services provided. In New York City, the cost is $31 per night per person. A day in jail is $165, a psychiatric hospital $467 and a community hospital $1,185. In Harford County, Social Services houses families in hotels during freezing weather at a cost of $45 a night not including the cost of services.

Last year, 82% of the families exiting the program went on to safe, stable, permanent housing. Our year end stats are in, and we are very excited to report that we served 54 families last year. 173 individuals and 110 children. Overall 33 families exited our program, with a success rate of 82%! We are so PROUD! “says Executive Director Robin Tomechko
