Last Tuesday August 5th, Becky Hammon, a WNBA Olympian and former Colorado State player was selected as by the San Antonio Spurs’ newest assistant coach. The 37-year-old was named the first full-time female coach in the NBA as well as the first full-time female coach in any of the major national sports.
Known for her tactical and strategic abilites, Hammon is also an effective player motivator and supporter. According to ESPN:
“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”
This is a huge step for women in the sports industry. She’s certainly paving the way for female players and aspiring coaches.
