Stay Organized at Home and at the Office

Being organized is a fundamental skill necessary to be successful at work and at home.  In my almost 10 years of helping women get and stay organized, I have found that there are two core strategies at the heart of every organized home.

1.       A Launch Pad. This is the area of your house that helps you get out the door.  It is where you keep your keys, cell phone, purse/work bag.  If you are also getting kids out the door, it is where the backpacks, lunch bags, shoes, sunscreen and extra cash for lunches or fieldtrips is kept.

2.       A Landing Pad. This is where all the mail, homework, lunch bags, receipts and things need to be processed from the day land.  This is also where they should be cleaned out, sorted and purged so that only the vital things are kept.

In addition, there are three things that you need to DO at home and at work to stay organized:

1.       Schedule it.  If something is not on your calendar, how do you expect it to get done?  EVERYTHING should be on your calendar and everything for work and home should be on ONE calendar.  Color code for each category of items.

2.       Label it.  Everything at the office and home should have a clear system that anyone else can understand.  If there are “homes” for everything and you clearly label the homes, no one will misplace items.  This is the same for a filing system or a pantry.

3.       Delegate it.  Despite what you might tell yourself, we can’t actually do everything ourselves.  Hire a cleaning company, an assistant, a marketing guru or a babysitter to help you achieve your goals.  Delegating will give you more time for both work and play!
