The Children’s Home (TCH) will present FACES 2012, Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the American Visionary Art Museum (800 Key Highway) in downtown Baltimore.
This business casual event will feature gourmet food from Simply Elegant, fine wine, dancing to live pop-jazz entertainment by Elegant Sounds, and bidding on original youth-inspired artwork created by The Children’s Home residents.
The event theme is “The Process of Recycling Our Lives.” The Children’s Home provides a haven and nurturing environment that enables abused, neglected or abandoned children to heal, grow and thrive.
As an artistic expression of that, the residents participate in weekly workshops to transform recycled materials into beautiful pieces of canvas artwork, jewelry, furniture, houseware items and assorted gifts that will be sold in FACES 2012 silent auction.
During the VIP reception/fashion show, TCH residents will create and model recyclable clothing and describe how it relates to recycling their lives.
Chairs: Event chair is Holly Joyce-Hoey, vice president of major gifts and planned giving with United Way of Central Maryland. A TCH Board member since 2006, she currently chairs the fundraising committee.
Honorary Chairs are long-time TCH supporters, Oliver and Ali Landow. Oliver is national customer services director for Education Networks of America, working from Ellicott City. Ali is senior director of marketing for CareOne Services inColumbia.
Since 1999, the couple has taken TCH residents to football and baseball games, bowling, the pool and out to lunch and dinner. They also provided turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at TCH, donated Ravens tickets and brought the residents Christmas presents.
Two years ago, the Landows started renting the Columbia Ice Rink for a TCH residents’ holiday ice skating party. Their son, Zack (age 11) is a hockey player whose team, the Huskies, gives the kids skating lessons. The party also includes pizza, ice cream and hockey jerseys the kids can keep. Ice Skating Day has become fond a TCH holiday tradition. The kids look forward to it every year, and always hug the Landows and give them high-fives.

Proceeds from FACES 2012 will go toward The Children’s Home’s facilities upgrade and expansion Capital Campaign. The Campaign’s first initiative was the construction of and programming for the Home’sDiagnosticCenter –Maryland’s only teen girls’ treatment facility providing diagnostic services for at-risk girls, ages 13-19. Additionally, a swimming pool was rebuilt and opened in July.
The Campaign now focuses on rebuilding the Home’s residential cottages, which date back to the 1920s. Building #1 will replace the cottage for boys, which was severely damaged in 2009 by an electrical fire. Building #2 will replace an orphanage-style facility with an energy-efficient, safe and easier-to-monitor therapeutic treatment facility.
