The Daily Record has announced this year’s Top 100 Women. Since 1996, The Daily Record has recognized more than 1,100 high-achieving Maryland women who are making an impact through their leadership, community service and mentoring.
Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, the first female Publisher who was promoted to the position over three years ago, is also the new President of the MDDC, which is also the first time a woman occupies that position. Ms. Huettner turned 40 just this past year and finds herself leading an influential publication that often honors women much older than her, which is a sign of progress and forward thinking and why we admire the publication. The Daily Record also does much to recognize up and coming women leaders with programs like the co-ed “20 in their 20’s” and also the Leading Women program, both designed to capitalize not only on the revenue generation potential of events, but also appeal to a wider audience.
At times The Top 100 Program has been chastised for being somewhat of an “exclusive sorority” akin to the “popular girls club” in high school; which is unfortunate as at the end of the day, it celebrates women. The sometimes negative perception related to who wins, versus who doesn’t is largely due to its close association to other organizations in the region that are membership based and somewhat excluding of a wider representation and therein the objectivity of the award, is often under scrutiny but one cannot deny that ALL women who are winners of this award, this year or previous, deserve recognition as very few would be considered not worthy on their own merits, public recognition or not. Winners are made up of prominent and accomplished professionals, as well as entrepreneurs, government representatives, community activists, business owners, and philanthropists. Each year, a representation of all categories is covered and therein lies the appeal to a broader audience.
It is interesting to note that year over the year, the award’s winners have started to mirror more effectively the multi-faceted landscape that makes up the dynamic women in the Maryland women in business eco-system as well as the overall region. For that alone, we are a HUGE fan of the Maryland Top 100 Program and highly encourage any smart business woman to make sure she secures her ticket early, as it is a “must do” on the social networking calendar, and you don’t want to miss it!
