A Treatment for Declining Sales

Epidavros Day Spa, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., bears the name of the ancient Greek coastal town known as a healing sanctuary. But by the end of 2009, owner Sandra Rovira says the spa’s atmosphere was anything but restorative.

Faced with a second consecutive year of plummeting sales, which Ms. Rovira attributed to the economy, the mood among the spa’s 20 employees — aestheticians, massage therapists and receptionists — was grim. She said many longtime employees seemed discouraged and unmotivated. “You could feel the negative energy,” said Ms. Rovira, who helped start the business in 1999 and later bought out her co-founder. “I had to shake things up.”

In February, following the advice of a friend in the industry, Ms. Rovira brought in a business consultant, Tamara Hynson, to help put Epidavros on the path to recovery. Ms. Hynson spent two weeks at the spa, talking to the staff, listening to their concerns and ultimately sharing her observations with Ms. Rovira.
