Hispanic Business Community Gathers to welcome Diplomatic Delegation including Vice President of the Dominican Republic

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Governor’s Commission of Hispanic Affairs welcomed His Excellency Dr. Rafael Alburquerque de Castro, Vice President of the Dominican Republic along with His Excellency Anibal de Castro Ambassador to the US at a private reception following a day of diplomatic good will at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum.

The event featured remarks and an official welcome by the Honorable Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland. Other notable dignitaries included Secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Alexander Sanchez, Secretary of State, John P McDonough as well as the Maryland House of Delegates Representative and Dominican Republic native the Honorable Joseline Pena Melnyk. The Chair of the Governor’s Commission of Hispanic Affairs, Yolanda Maria Martinez and Chair of the MD Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Veronica Cool who is also a native of the Dominican Republic made further remarks about the positive energy and opportunity the day’s activities and endeavors presented for all.  A wonderful, traditional Dominican folkloric dance was enjoyed by all participants along with traditional Dominican music reflecting the diversity of all Latin cultures present in the state of Maryland.

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber in a show of strong solidarity with the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs hosted this ground breaking visit where the dignitaries were able to tour the Maryland House of Representatives as well as the Legislature, and hosted town-hall talks to include potential trade & commerce missions. Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt Governor Anthony Brown also welcomed the delegation with full diplomatic pomp & circumstance, including red carpet and flags.  The events certainly laid the foundation to further develop collaborative opportunities between the State of Maryland and the Dominican Republic.
